    Description

This auction is for a paper pattern.
This Over the Knee Gaiter pattern is based on research in La Marine, The French Colonial Soldier in Canada, 1745-1761, by Andrew Gallup and Donald F. Shaffer. Many other resources were consulted, including Uniformes de L'Armee Franciaise de Fontenoy a Waterloo by Michel Petard. Other sources include numerous Osprey books of all nationalities and conflicts from Colonial to Napoleonic times. The basic style of this gaiter does not change up through the Napoleonic Wars and is used by many nationalities.  These gaiters will need a garter just below the knee.
This gaiter is designed to be worn over breeches, shoes and socks.  It is shaped to fit closely around ankle, calf, knee and thigh.  The back of the gaiter is flat over the back of the shoe, no heel cup.  Check with your unit specifications to see what number of buttons should be used.  Some units may use the top five buttons to attach the gaiters to the breeches.  If you unit does this, make 5 buttonholes at the top on the button side of your gaiter and on the buttonhole side, so the breeches buttons will go through both sets of buttonholes. Measure your breeches to see if the button placement will line up.  You may have to adjust the button and buttonhole placement on the pattern.
This pattern uses 24 buttons per leg for French Napoleonic.  (French Napoleonic Infantry use 20-24 buttons, based on height of the man). Some units use leather buttons with two holes, others use horn buttons, painted wooden buttons or their regimental buttons.  The buttons are ¾ size.
The total gaiter height for this pattern is 23 1/2".
